Home » Au Pair ABC » Black Sheep Cameroon and Nigeria under observationIn recent times we often got the information that problems occurred with au pairs from Cameroon and Nigeria (also from Kenya sometimes). Are all au pairs form Africa criminals?Of course NOT! There is not more criminal activity in African than in other countries. We are not trying to get people prejudiced against people from these countries. This is just a general notice on which problems might occur.Unfortunately in the case of au pairs from the countries mentioned above, it happens more often than in the case of au pairs from other countries that the person does not arrive at your family or that he/she leaves the family shortly after the arrival (mostly within a couple of days).
Rate of dropouts too highA rather harmless reason for the high rate of dropouts might be cultural differences.Unfortunately other reasons got to our attention, too. The girls do not leave your family because they want to, but they yield to the pressure which so-called “friends” exert on them. In the worst case those “friends” urge them to prostitution, mostly by using the au pairs’ families in their home country as a leverage. 1000 Dollars for a placement?Only very few people in Cameroon, Kenya or Nigeria have access to the internet. So many information sources remain out of reach to many people. They often pay 1,000 to 1,500 US$ for a placement in Europe. Travel costs and visa fees must additionally be paid. Just to be able to pay these placement fees to so-called friends, a whole family earning 600 US$ per year on the average (source: wikipedia) needs to run into depts for several years. Those people who smuggle people across borders use this situation by deferring the host family's payment and then by exerting pressure on the girls when they are in the host country. How does Aupair World deal with this?Due to the situation described we currently can only accept registrations by au pairs from Cameroon, Kenya and Nigeria if it is possible for us to carefully check their registrations. This decision was very difficult for us to take because mainly young people who have not done anything wrong are affected by it. But unfortunately we do not see a different possibility to protect au pairs and host families and to prevent supporting this kind of criminal activity.Applications by au pairs from CameroonIf you still get an application by an au pair from Cameroon,Kenya or Nigeria, please check whether you can find the profile on our database. If you cannot find the profile referring to the application, there is something wrong (even in the event that the au pair says that he/she has found your profile via a friend's registration that can be found on our pages). If you have doubts, please feel free to contact us.
