Au Pair Programme Spain

Contract, insurance, driving licence & Co.

Here you will find some information on au pair related topics such as the au pair contract, insurance and safety.

Health insurance

Host families in Spain do not need to take out health insurance and accident insurance for the au pair. However, you can help your au pair to take out such an insurance himself/herself.

Is your au pair an EU citizen? In this case, he/she should find out at his/her health insurance at home whether it is also valid during the au pair placement in Spain. In this case, the au pair requires an European health insurance card from his/her health insurance company. This card needs to be presented at the attending doctor in Spain.

Alternatively, the au pair can register with the Spanish health insurance and social security ("Seguridad Social") upon arrival in Spain. This insurance bears the costs if the au pair falls ill in Spain.

Is your au pair a Non-EU citizen? In this case, the au pair needs to contact the Seguridad Social in Spain. They will tell him/her whether he/she needs to present proofs of health insurance. Therefore, the au pair should bring along all certificates to Spain, just in case. Furthermore, he/she will learn from the Seguridad Social where and how he/she can take out insurance.

Contract

It is important that you and your au pair clarify your mutual expectations in advance and put down in writing whatever is important to you. Thus, you can avoid future disappointments. We recommend that you sign the official au pair contract according to the European Agreement.

On our page Costs, working hours, time off Co. you will find more detailed information on the general regulations for the au pair placement.

Driving and driving license

Many host families require an au pair who holds a driving license. Moreover, he/she needs sufficient driving experience.

You probably want your au pair to drive. Thus, you should clarify beforehand how things stand in terms of liability and insurance. You need to be well informed about who pays for the damages that could result from an accident caused by the au pair.

Furthermore, enquire prior to your au pair's arrival whether or not his/her driving licence is also valid in Spain.

Be on the safe side:

  • Have you already spoken to your au pair personally? During a telephone conversation, you can quickly find out how well you get along with each other. Here you get more tips regarding your safety.
  • A good knowledge of Spanish will make it easier for your au pair to express his/her wishes and needs from the beginning. Above all in the case of illness or when left alone with your children, the au pair will benefit from a comprehensive command of vocabulary.
