Au pair Jenna: How do I make the right choice?

Question of the week (issue 56). Au Pair Jenna from the UK wishes to become an au pair in Spain. She has found three families in Madrid among whom she will choose her host. There is one host family she likes in particular. How can she be sure to make the right choice now?

Hello Aupair World,

I am from the UK and have found three nice host families from your website for my au pair placement in Spain (Madrid). I am in touch with all of them and they have chosen me as one of their favourites. There is one host family I like in particular. We have already agreed upon many issues – and, from our first contact via Skype, I can say that we like each other very much. What are the next steps I need to take? How can I be sure that I pick the right family?

Jenna from the United Kingdom

Dear Jenna,

We are happy to hear that you have frequently been communicating with the host families you are interested in and that you will now make your choice among the three families you like best. Thus, you have already made very important choices and good progress!

You are still unsure about which of the three families may be the right one for you? Do not worry!

More tips for making the right choice:

  • A tried and tested method: Ask your parents, siblings or friends for their opinion. They all know you very well and can thus support you in making the right decision.
  • Is your host country not too far from your home country and would you be able to get a good-value connection to your host family's home? In this case, you could visit them before you start working. Thus, you would closely witness the lives of all family members in their close surroundings noticing instantly, if you match well. The best thing to do is ask your host family if they are also interested in a get-together before your official placement starts and clarify who would bears the travel costs for this purpose. Once you have coordinated your schedule, you should bring along your open questions to your host family and off you go!

In the end, there is always a certain risk when it comes to making the right decision, as it is always the case in life. However, even in this case there is always the possibility to change families in a fair way and to have a great time with a new host family.

We wish you good luck for your au pair stay, hoping that you will have many great experiences!   Your Aupair World Team
