Ireland

General requirements:
To become an au pair in Ireland, you should at least have basic knowledge of English and a school-leaving qualification.
It is an advantage if you have a driving license.

Age: 18 to 27

Duration of stay: An au pair normally stays 6 to 12 months in Ireland.

Working hours: 25 to 35 hours per week
The host family can ask the au pair to do some baby sitting up to 3 evenings per week.

Pocket money: app. 60 to 65 euro per week (depending on the number of working hours)

Holidays / spare time: The au pair is entiteled to two days off per week and to one week of paid holidays per six months.

Language course: An au pair should have the opportunity of attending a language course. The costs for a language course need to be paid by the au pair herself/himself.

Administrative procedure:

For Au Pairs from the EU-member states:
Families living in the Republic of Ireland can only welcome au pairs from the EU or from the three following countries: Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. Au pairs from these countries only have to register with the Irish police when they arrive but do not need any work permit.

For Au Pairs from all other countries:
For au pairs coming from other countries it is possible to obtain a student visa if the prospective applicant is registered to study English at an approved language school. A student may hold down a part-time job to support themselves whilst studying. Part-time cannot be more than 25 hours per week. The immigration officials at the entry point however will always have the right to refuse entry should they believe the student is actually intending to work full-time.

Who is responsible for acquiring a Visa for the Au Pair?
The Host family and the Au Pair are both responsible for acquiring a Visa if necesary.
