New Zealand

In New Zealand there is no au pair program but the Working Holiday Scheme which means that you cannot go to New Zealand as an au pair but only as a Working Holiday Maker. To be able to go to New Zealand under the Working Holiday Scheme you must be a citizen of a country which has signed a reciprocal Working Holiday Maker Arrangement with New Zealand.

Working Holiday Scheme

Conditions

Age: 18 - 30 years
Working hours: 30-35 hours a week
Pocket money: 80-130 NZD per week

General requirements:

  • you must not bring children with you
  • you can enrol in one training or study course of up to three months duration during your visit
  • you must have a passport that's valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand
  • you must not have been approved a visa permit under a Working Holiday Scheme before

Accepted countries:

Citizens from the following countries can apply for a Working Holiday Scheme Work Visa:

Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, France, Hong Kong  (HKSAR), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA, Uruguay

The duration of stay and the respective working conditions differ from country to country. For more detailed information please click here and select your country of origin.

Visa: When applying for the visa the Working Holiday Maker needs to have a valid passport and a credit card. Please also see the Immigration section of the government on the Working Holiday Program.

Travel costs: The au pair must bear the travel costs himself/herself.  Please be aware that you may be asked to provide evidence of your return ticket on arrival in New Zealand. If you as a host family want to bear a part of the costs, please do not do this until the au pair has successfully arrived and stayed with you for a part of the agreed time.

Duration of the stay: Most Working Holiday Makers can stay up to 12 months in New Zealand. Exceptions apply for people from United Kingdom (23 months) as well as from Malaysia and Singapore (6 months). However, there are regulations that au pairs from certain countries must not work for the same employer for more than three months.

Financial requirements: The Working Holiday Maker must have sufficient funds to support him-/herself for the first time of his/her stay (approximately NZD 4200). The young person must also have a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket.

Health insurance: You must hold medical and comprehensive hospitalisation insurance for the length of your stay in New Zealand unless there is a reciprocal health insurance arrangement between New Zealand and your country of citizenship.
